In regards to the Whangarei District Council meeting of Wednesday 22 April 2009 @ 1000hrs.

I am possibly one of the ratepayers Mr Syers comments were aimed at. Would you please reply and quote the section of law that states "people must stand when the Mayor enters the room".

It did not happen in the previous council.

At no time have I been asked by Mr Syers why I do not stand up when the mayor enters the room and am only too happy to explain my reasons, which are fairly well known. His comments made in a forum at which no right of defence or comment was accepted is not to an acceptable standard. I do not believe a full council meeting is the place for Councillor Syers to view his personal beliefs.

 

It is unfortunate that he has obviously been concerned but not prepared not ask such questions to the citizens of Whangarei. He has had many attempts before and after the meetings we regularly attend to approach me on this matter.

 

I believe Councillor Warwick Syers outburst at the start of the meeting is in breach of WDC Councillors Code of Conduct sections; Highlighted

Elected members are primarily accountable to the electors of the district through the democratic process. However members must note that the Auditor-General may hold them to account for unlawful actions or expenditure or for breaches of the Local Authorities (Members’ Interests) Act 1968.

2/ Relationships with the Community

Effective council decision-making depends on productive relationships between elected members and the community at large.

Members should ensure that individual citizens are accorded respect in their dealings with the council, have their concerns listened to, and deliberated on in accordance with the requirements of the Act.

Members should act in a manner that encourages and values community involvement in local democracy.
